Theylived,—Hippolyteandhismotherandthechildren,—inasmallhousenotfaroff,andthelittleoneswerehappy,ifonlybecausetheywereabletoescapefromtheinvalidintothegarden.TheprincehadenoughtodoinkeepingthepeacebetweentheirritableHippolyteandhismother,andeventuallytheformerbecamesomaliciousandsarcasticonthesubjectoftheapproachingwedding,thatMuishkintookoffenceatlast,andrefusedtocontinuehisvisits.

Hippolytewasveryill,andlookedasthoughhecouldnotlongsurvive.Hewastearfulatfirst,butgrewmoreandmoresarcasticandmaliciousastheinterviewproceeded.
