           Theylived,Hippolyteandhismotherandthechildren,inasmallhousenotfaroff,andthelittleoneswerehappy,ifonlybecausetheywereabletoescapefromtheinvalidintothegarden.TheprincehadenoughtodoinkeepingthepeacebetweentheirritableHippolyteandhismother,andeventuallytheformerbecamesomaliciousandsarcasticonthesubjectoftheapproachingwedding,thatMuishkintookoffenceatlast,andrefusedtocontinuehisvisits.

           Acoupleofdayslater,however,Hippolyte’smothercamewithtearsinhereyes,andbeggedtheprincetocomeback,“orhewouldeatherupbodily.”SheaddedthatHippolytehadagreatsecrettodisclose.Ofcoursetheprincewent.Therewasnosecret,however,unlesswereckoncertainpantingsandagitatedglancesaround(probablyallputon)astheinvalidbeggedhisvisitorto“bewareofRogojin.”

           “Heisthesortofman,”hecontinued,“whowon’tgiveuphisobject,youknow;heisnotlikeyouandme,princehebelongstoquiteadifferentorderofbeings.Ifhesetshisheartonathinghewon’tbeafraidofanythingandsoon.

           Hippolytewasveryill,andlookedasthoughhecouldnotlongsurvive.Hewastearfulatfirst,butgrewmoreandmoresarcasticandmaliciousastheinterviewproceeded.

           TheprincequestionedhimindetailastohishintsaboutRogojin.HewasanxioustoseizeuponsomefactswhichmightconfirmHippolyte’svaguewarnings;buttherewerenone;onlyHippolyte’sownprivateimpressionsandfeelings.
