           Theservantlefttheroom.Verawasabouttofollowher,butreturnedandapproachedtheprincewithapreoccupiedair.

           “Prince!”shesaid,“havepityonthatpoorboy;don’tturnhimouttoday.”

           “Notfortheworld;heshalldojustashelikes.”

           “Hewon’tdoanyharmnow;andanddon’tbetooseverewithhim.”

           “Ohdearno!Why

           “Andandyouwon’tlaughathim?That’sthechiefthing.”

           “Ohno!Never.”

           “HowfoolishIamtospeakofsuchthingstoamanlikeyou,”saidVera,blushing.“Thoughyoudolooktired,”sheadded,halfturningaway,“youreyesaresosplendidatthismomentsofullofhappiness.”

           “Really?”askedtheprince,gleefully,andhelaughedindelight.

           ButVera,simple-mindedlittlegirlthatshewas(justlikeaboy,infact),herebecamedreadfullyconfused,ofasudden,andranhastilyoutoftheroom,laughingandblushing.

           “Whatadearlittlethingsheis,”thoughttheprince,andimmediatelyforgotallabouther.

           Hewalkedtothefarendoftheverandah,wherethesofastood,withatableinfrontofit.Herehesatdownandcoveredhisfacewithhishands,andsoremainedfortenminutes.Suddenlyheputhishandinhiscoat-pocketandhurriedlyproducedthreeletters.
