           Theprincecertainlyhaddartedaratherpiercinglookather,andnowobservedthatshehadbeguntoblushviolently.Atsuchmoments,themoreAglayablushed,theangriershegrewwithherself;andthiswasclearlyexpressedinhereyes,whichflashedlikefire.Asarule,sheventedherwrathonherunfortunatecompanion,beitwhoitmight.Shewasveryconsciousofherownshyness,andwasnotnearlysotalkativeashersistersforthisreasoninfact,attimesshewasmuchtooquiet.When,therefore,shewasboundtotalk,especiallyatsuchdelicatemomentsasthis,sheinvariablydidsowithanairofhaughtydefiance.Shealwaysknewbeforehandwhenshewasgoingtoblush,longbeforetheblushcame.

           “Perhapsyoudonotwishtoacceptmyproposition?”sheasked,gazinghaughtilyattheprince.

           “Ohyes,Ido;butitissounnecessary.Imean,Ididnotthinkyouneedmakesuchaproposition,”saidtheprince,lookingconfused.

           “Whatdidyousuppose,then?WhydidyouthinkIinvitedyououthere?Isupposeyouthinkmea‘littlefool,’astheyallcallmeathome?”

           “Ididn’tknowtheycalledyouafool.Icertainlydon’tthinkyouone.”

           “Youdon’tthinkmeone!Oh,dearme!that’sverycleverofyou;youputitsoneatly,too.”

           “Inmyopinion,youarefarfromafoolsometimesinfact,youareveryintelligent.YousaidaverycleverthingjustnowaboutmybeingunjustbecauseIhadonlyjustice.Ishallrememberthat,andthinkaboutit.
