           Suddenlythebirddartedoutofthetreeandaway,andinstantlyhethoughtofthe“flybuzzingaboutinthesun’srays”thatHippolytehadtalkedof;howthatitknewitsplaceandwasaparticipatorintheuniversallife,whilehealonewasan“outcast.”Thispicturehadimpressedhimatthetime,andhemeditateduponitnow.Anold,forgottenmemoryawokeinhisbrain,andsuddenlyburstintoclearnessandlight.ItwasarecollectionofSwitzerland,duringthefirstyearofhiscure,theveryfirstmonths.Atthattimehehadbeenprettynearlyanidiotstill;hecouldnotspeakproperly,andhaddifficultyinunderstandingwhenothersspoketohim.Heclimbedthemountain-side,onesunnymorning,andwanderedlongandaimlesslywithacertainthoughtinhisbrain,whichwouldnotbecomeclear.Abovehimwastheblazingsky,below,thelake;allaroundwasthehorizon,clearandinfinite.Helookedoutuponthis,longandanxiously.Herememberedhowhehadstretchedouthisarmstowardsthebeautiful,boundlessblueofthehorizon,andwept,andwept.Whathadsotormentedhimwastheideathathewasastrangertoallthis,thathewasoutsidethisgloriousfestival.
