           “Notasapresent,notasapresent!Ishouldnothavetakentheliberty,”saidLebedeff,appearingsuddenlyfrombehindhisdaughter.“ItisourownPushkin,ourfamilycopy,Annenkoff’sedition;itcouldnotbeboughtnow.Ibegtosuggest,withgreatrespect,thatyourexcellencyshouldbuyit,andthusquenchthenobleliterarythirstwhichisconsumingyouatthismoment,”heconcludedgrandiloquently.

           “Oh!ifyouwillsellit,verygoodandthankyou.Youshallnotbealoser!Butforgoodness’sake,don’ttwistaboutlikethat,sir!Ihaveheardofyou;theytellmeyouareaverylearnedperson.Wemusthaveatalkoneofthesedays.Youwillbringmethebooksyourself?”

           “Withthegreatestrespect...and...andveneration,”repliedLebedeff,makingextraordinarygrimaces.

           “Well,bringthem,withorwithoutrespect,providedalwaysyoudonotdropthemontheway;butonthecondition,”wentonthelady,lookingfullathim,“thatyoudonotcrossmythreshold.Idonotintendtoreceiveyoutoday.YoumaysendyourdaughterVeraatonce,ifyoulike.Iammuchpleasedwithher.”

           “Whydon’tyoutellhimaboutthem?”saidVeraimpatientlytoherfather.“Theywillcomein,whetheryouannouncethemornot,andtheyarebeginningtomakearow.
