           Heheldabundlemadeupofanoldfadedsilkhandkerchiefthatapparentlycontainedallhistravellingwardrobe,andworethickshoesandgaiters,hiswholeappearancebeingveryun-Russian.

           Hisblack-hairedneighbourinspectedthesepeculiarities,havingnothingbettertodo,andatlengthremarked,withthatrudeenjoymentofthediscomfortsofotherswhichthecommonclassessooftenshow:

           “Cold?”

           “Very,”saidhisneighbour,readily,“andthisisathaw,too.Fancyifithadbeenahardfrost!Ineverthoughtitwouldbesocoldintheoldcountry.I’vegrownquiteoutofthewayofit.”

           “What,beenabroad,Isuppose?”

           “Yes,straightfromSwitzerland.”

           “Wheugh!mygoodness!”Theblack-hairedyoungfellowwhistled,andthenlaughed.

           Theconversationproceeded.Thereadinessofthefair-hairedyoungmaninthecloaktoanswerallhisoppositeneighbour’squestionswassurprising.Heseemedtohavenosuspicionofanyimpertinenceorinappropriatenessinthefactofsuchquestionsbeingputtohim.Replyingtothem,hemadeknowntotheinquirerthathecertainlyhadbeenlongabsentfromRussia,morethanfouryears;thathehadbeensentabroadforhishealth;thathehadsufferedfromsomestrangenervousmaladyakindofepilepsy,withconvulsivespasms.Hisinterlocutorburstoutlaughingseveraltimesathisanswers;andmorethanever,whentothequestion,“whetherhehadbeencured?”thepatientreplied:

           “No,theydidnotcureme.
