           Threemonthsafterthedepartureoftheprince,theIvolginfamilydiscoveredthatColiahadmadeacquaintancewiththeEpanchins,andwasonveryfriendlytermswiththedaughters.Variaheardofitfirst,thoughColiahadnotaskedhertointroducehim.Littlebylittlethefamilygrewquitefondofhim.MadameEpanchinatfirstlookedonhimwithdisdain,andreceivedhimcoldly,butinashorttimehegrewtopleaseher,because,asshesaid,he“wascandidandnoflatterer”averytruedescription.Fromthefirstheputhimselfonanequalitywithhisnewfriends,andthoughhesometimesreadnewspapersandbookstothemistressofthehouse,itwassimplybecausehelikedtobeuseful.
