           Duringtheselastfewyearsallthreeofthegeneral’sdaughtersAlexandra,Adelaida,andAglayahadgrownupandmatured.OfcoursetheywereonlyEpanchins,buttheirmother’sfamilywasnoble;theymightexpectconsiderablefortunes;theirfatherhadhopesofattainingtoveryhighrankindeedinhiscountry’sserviceallofwhichwassatisfactory.Allthreeofthegirlsweredecidedlypretty,eventheeldest,Alexandra,whowasjusttwenty-fiveyearsold.Themiddledaughterwasnowtwenty-three,whiletheyoungest,Aglaya,wastwenty.Thisyoungestgirlwasabsolutelyabeauty,andhadbegunoflatetoattractconsiderableattentioninsociety.Butthiswasnotall,foreveryoneofthethreewasclever,welleducated,andaccomplished.
