           “Asonofmyoldfriend,dear,”hecried;“surelyyoumustrememberPrinceNicolaiLvovitch?YousawhimatatTver.”

           “Idon’trememberanyNicolaiLvovitch.Wasthatyourfather?”sheinquiredoftheprince.

           “Yes,buthediedatElizabethgrad,notatTver,”saidtheprince,rathertimidly.“SoPavlichefftoldme.”

           “No,Tver,”insistedthegeneral;“heremovedjustbeforehisdeath.Youwereverysmallandcannotremember;andPavlicheff,thoughanexcellentfellow,mayhavemadeamistake.”

           “YouknewPavlicheffthen?”

           “Oh,yesawonderfulfellow;butIwaspresentmyself.Igavehimmyblessing.”

           “Myfatherwasjustabouttobetriedwhenhedied,”saidtheprince,“althoughIneverknewofwhathewasaccused.
