           "Andatoncestruckbythefutilityofcontendingwiththelaw,shenownervouslyindicatedClyde’sroom,feelingstillthatsomeinsaneandmostunfairandinsultingmistakewasbeingmade.

           ButthetwohavingproceededtoClyde’sroom,theybegantolookhereandthere.Atoncebothnotedonesmallandnotverystrongtrunk,lockedandstandinginonecorner,whichMr.Faunce,thedetective,immediatelybegantolifttodecideuponitsweightandstrength,whileMasonbegantoexamineeachparticularthingintheroomthecontentsofalldrawersandboxes,aswellasthepocketsofallclothes.Andinthechiffonierdrawers,alongwithsomediscardedunderwearandshirtsandafewoldinvitationsfromtheTrumbulls,Starks,Griffiths,andHarriets,henowfoundamemorandumsheetwhichClydehadcarriedhomefromhisdeskandonwhichhehadwritten:"Wednesday,Feb.20th,dinneratStarks"—andbelowthat,"Friday,22nd,Trumbulls"—andthishandwritingMasonatoncecomparedwiththatonthecardinhispocket,andbeingconvincedbythesimilaritythathewasintheroomoftherightman,hetooktheinvitationsandthenlookedtowardthetrunkwhichthedetectivewasnowcontemplating.

           "Whataboutthis,chief?Willyoutakeitawayoropenithere?"

           "Ithink,"saidMasonsolemnly,"we’dbetteropenthatrighthere,Faunce.I’llsendforitafterwards,butIwanttoseewhat’sinitnow.
