Subsequenttothis,theguidewhohadbroughtClydeandRobertafromGunLodgeconferringwiththeinn-keepersatBigBitternandGrassLake,itwasfactuallydetermined:(1)thatthedrownedgirlhadleftherbagatGunLodgewhereasCliffordGoldenhadtakenhiswithhim;(2)thattherewasadisturbingdiscrepancybetweentheregistrationatGrassLakeandthatatBigBittern,thenamesCarlGrahamandCliffordGoldenbeingcarefullydiscussedbythetwoinn-keepersandtheidentityofthebearerastolooksestablished;and(3)thatthesaidCliffordGoldenorCarlGrahamhadaskedoftheguidewhohaddrivenhimovertoBigBitternwhetherthereweremanypeopleonthelakethatday.Andthereafterthesuspicionsthusfarengenderedfurthercoalescingintothecertaintythattherehadbeenfoulplay.Therewasscarcelyanydoubtofit.
ImmediatelyuponhisarrivalCoronerHeitwasmadetounderstandthatthesemenofthenorthwoodsweredeeplymovedandinadditiondeterminedintheirsuspicions.TheydidnotbelievethatthebodyofCliffordGoldenorCarlGrahamhadeversunktothebottomofthelake.WiththeresultthatHeitonviewingthebodyoftheunknowngirllaidcarefullyonacotintheboat-house,andfindingheryoungandattractive,wasstrangelyaffected,notonlybyherlooksbutthiscircumambientatmosphereofsuspicion.
