AnditwasnotlongafterClydehadbeguntoworkherethathewasinformedbythesepeculiarboyswithwhomhewasassociated,oneormoreofwhomwasconstantlyseatedwithhimuponthe"hop-bench,"astheycalledit,astotheevidenceandpresenceevenhere—itwasnotlongbeforevariousexamplesofthephenomenawerepointedouttohim—ofacertaintypeofsocialpervert,morallydisarrangedandsociallytaboo,whosoughttoarrestandinterestboysoftheirtype,inordertocomeintosomeformofillicitrelationshipwiththem,whichatfirstClydecouldnotgrasp.Themerethoughtofitmadehimill.Andyetsomeoftheseboys,ashewasnowinformed—acertainyouthinparticular,whowasnotonthesamewatchwithhimatthistime—weresupposedtobeofthemindthat"fellforit,"asoneoftheotheryouthsphrasedit.
Andthetalkandthepalaverthatwentoninthelobbyandthegrill,tosaynothingoftherestaurantsandrooms,weresufficienttoconvinceanyinexperiencedandnone-too-discerningmindthatthechiefbusinessoflifeforanyonewithalittlemoneyorsocialpositionwastoattendatheater,aball-gameinseason,ortodance,motor,entertainfriendsatdinner,ortotraveltoNewYork,Europe,Chicago,California.
