           InhisexcitementhewasforgettingthatatonetimeandanotherinthepasthehadindicatedtoRobertathatthestateofhisownparentswasnotwhollyunprosperousandthatifthingsdidnotgojusttohislikinghere,hecouldreturnwestandperhapsfindsomethingtodooutthere.Anditwassomegeneralrecollectionofthisthatnowcausedhertoask:"Couldn’twegoouttoDenverorsomethinglikethat?Wouldn’tyourfatherbewillingtohelpyougetsomethingforatime,anyhow?"

           Hertonewasverysoftandpleading,anattempttomakeClydefeelthatthingscouldnotbeasbadashewasimagining.Butthemerementionofhisfatherinconnectionwithallthistheassumptionthathe,ofallpeople,mightproveanescapefromdrudgeryforthemboth,wasalittletoomuch.Itshowedhowdreadfullyincompletewasherunderstandingofhistruepositioninthisworld.Worse,shewaslookingforhelpfromthatquarter.And,notfindingit,latermightpossiblyreproachhimforthatwhocouldtellforhisliesinconnectionwithit.Itmadesoveryclearnowthenecessityforfrustrating,ifpossible,andthatatonce,anytendencytowardthisideaofmarriage.Itcouldnotbeever.

           Andyethowwashetoopposethisideawithsafety,sinceshefeltthatshehadthisclaimonhimhowsaytoheropenlyandcoldlythathecouldnotandwouldnotmarryher?Andunlesshedidsonowshemightthinkitwouldbefairandlegitimateenoughforhertocompelhimtodoso.
