ForhavingdiscoveredthatClydewasrelatedtotheGriffiths,thissameShorthadsought,asameansforhisowngeneraladvancementinotherdirections,toscrapeasmuchofagenialandintimaterelationshipwithhimaspossible,only,asClydesawit,andinviewofthegeneralattitudeofhisveryhighrelatives,ithadnot,uptothistimeatleast,beenpossibleforhimtoconsideranysuchintimacyseriously.Andyet,findingShortsoveryaffableandhelpfulingeneral,hewasnotabovereachingatleastaneasyandgenialsurfacerelationshipwithhim,whichShortappearedtoacceptingoodpart.Indeed,asatfirst,hismannerremainedseekingandnotalittlesycophanticattimes.Andsoitwasthatamongallthosewithwhomhecouldbesaidtobeineitherintimateorcasualcontact,Shortwasabouttheonlyonewhoofferedevenachanceforaninquirywhichmightproveproductiveofsomehelpfulinformation.
Inconsequence,inpassingShort’splaceeacheveningandmorning,oncehethoughtofhiminthislight,hemadeitapointtonodandsmileinamostfriendlymanner,untilatleastthreedayshadgoneby.Andthen,feelingthathehadpavedthewayasmuchashispresentpredicamentwouldpermit,hestoppedin,notatallsurethatonthisfirstoccasionhewouldbeabletobroachthedangeroussubject.
