           Clydehastenedtocoverhismistake."Eight,"hecalled.Therebeingnooneelseontheelevatorwiththem,theNegroelevatorboyinchargeofthecarsalutedhimatonce.

           "You’senew,ain’tyou?Iain’tseenyouaroundherbefo’."

           "Yes,Ijustcameon,"repliedClyde.

           "Well,youwon’thateithere,"commentedthisyouthinthemostfriendlyway."Noonehatesthishouse,I’llsay.Eightdidyousay?"HestoppedthecarandClydesteppedout.Hewastoonervoustothinktoaskthedirectionandnowbeganlookingatroomnumbers,onlytodecideafteramomentthathewasinthewrongcorridor.Thesoftbrowncarpetunderhisfeet;thesoft,cream-tintedwalls;thesnow-whitebowllightsintheceilingallseemedtohimpartsofaperfectionandasocialsuperioritywhichwasalmostunbelievablesoremotefromallthathehadeverknown.
