           AndClydefeeling,andnotunlikeRoberta,whowasfirmlyandevenpainfullyconvincedofit,thatthiswassindeadly,mortalsincebothhismotherandfatherhadsooftenemphasizedthattheseduceradultererwhopreysoutsidethesacredprecinctsofmarriage.AndRoberta,peeringnervouslyintotheblankfuture,wonderingwhathow,inanycase,byanychance,Clydeshouldchange,orfailher.Yetthenightreturning,hermoodoncemoreveering,andsheaswellashehurryingtomeetsomewhereonlylater,inthesilenceofthemiddlenight,toslipintothisunlightedroomwhichwasprovingsomuchmoreofaParadisethaneithermighteverknowagainsowildandunrecapturableisthefeverofyouth.

           Andattimesanddespiteallhisotherdoubtsandfears,Clyde,becauseofthissuddenabandonmentbyRobertaofherselftohisdesires,feelingforthefirsttime,really,inallhisfeverishyears,thatatlasthewasamanoftheworldonewhowastrulybeginningtoknowwomen.Andsotakingtohimselfanairormannerthatsaidasplainlyasmighthaveanywords—"BeholdIamnolongertheinexperienced,neglectedsimpletonofbutafewweeksago,butanindividualofimportnowsomeonewhoknowssomethingaboutlife.
