For,althoughthepresentconditionsandsituationweredifferent,andhehadnomoralauthoritywherewithtochargeRobertawithanysuchunfairtreatmentasHortensehadmetedouttohim,stilltherewasthisotherfactthatgirls—allofthem—wereobviouslystubbornandself-preservative,alwayssettingthemselvesapartfromandevenabovetheaveragemanandsowishingtocompelhimtodoalotofthingsforthemwithouttheirwishingtodoanythinginreturn.AndhadnotRattereralwaystoldhimthatinsofarasgirlswereconcernedhewasmoreorlessofafool—tooeasy—tooeagertoshowhishandandletthemknowthathewasstruckonthem.Whereas,asRattererhadexplained,Clydepossessedthelooks—the"goods"—andwhyshouldhealwaysbetrailingaftergirlsunlesstheywantedhimverymuch.Andthisthoughtandcomplimenthadimpressedhimverymuchatthattime.OnlybecauseofthefiascosinconnectionwithHortenseandRitahewasmoreearnestnow.YetherehewasagainindangerofrepeatingorbringinguponhimselfwhathadbefallenhiminthecaseofHortenseandRita.
Atthesametimehewasnotwithouttheself-incriminatingthoughtthatinseekingthis,mostdistinctlyhewasdrivingtowardarelationshipwhichwasnotlegitimateandthatwouldprovedangerousinthefuture.
