           For,althoughthepresentconditionsandsituationweredifferent,andhehadnomoralauthoritywherewithtochargeRobertawithanysuchunfairtreatmentasHortensehadmetedouttohim,stilltherewasthisotherfactthatgirlsallofthemwereobviouslystubbornandself-preservative,alwayssettingthemselvesapartfromandevenabovetheaveragemanandsowishingtocompelhimtodoalotofthingsforthemwithouttheirwishingtodoanythinginreturn.AndhadnotRattereralwaystoldhimthatinsofarasgirlswereconcernedhewasmoreorlessofafooltooeasytooeagertoshowhishandandletthemknowthathewasstruckonthem.Whereas,asRattererhadexplained,Clydepossessedthelooksthe"goods"—andwhyshouldhealwaysbetrailingaftergirlsunlesstheywantedhimverymuch.Andthisthoughtandcomplimenthadimpressedhimverymuchatthattime.OnlybecauseofthefiascosinconnectionwithHortenseandRitahewasmoreearnestnow.YetherehewasagainindangerofrepeatingorbringinguponhimselfwhathadbefallenhiminthecaseofHortenseandRita.
