           For,tobeginwith,theNewtons,sisterandbrother-in-lawofGraceMarr,withwhomshelived,andwho,despitethefactthattheywerenotunkindly,provedtobe,almostmoresothanwerethetypeswithwhom,eitherinBiltzorTrippetsMills,shehadbeeninconstantcontact,themostordinarysmalltownmillworkersreligiousandnarrowtoadegree.GeorgeNewton,aseveryonecouldseeandfeel,wasapleasantifnotveryemotionalorromanticpersonwhotookhisvarioussmallplansinregardtohimselfandhisfutureasoftheutmostimportance.PrimarilyhewassavingwhatlittlecashhecouldoutofthewagesheearnedasthreadmanintheCranstonWickwirefactorytoenablehimtoembarkuponsomebusinessforwhichhethoughthimselffitted.Andtothisend,andtofurtherenhancehismeagersavings,hehadjoinedwithhiswifeintheschemeoftakingoveranoldhouseinTaylorStreetwhichpermittedtherentingofenoughroomstocarrytherentandinadditiontosupplythefoodforthefamilyandfiveboarders,countingtheirlaborandworriesintheprocessasnothing.Andontheotherhand,GraceMarr,aswellasNewton’swife,Mary,wereofthattypethathereaselsewherefindthebulkoftheirsocialsatisfactioninsuchsmallmattersasrelatetotheorganizationofasmallhome,theestablishingofitsimportandintegrityinapettyandhighlyconventionalneighborhoodandthecontemplationoflifeandconductthroughthelensfurnishedbyapurelysectariancreed.
