AlsohesoonlearnedthatseveralmilesoutfromLycurgus,ontheMohawk,nearahamletcalledVanTroup,wasaninter-factorycountryclub,towhichmostofthedepartmentheadsofthevariousfactoriesaboutbelonged,but,alas,ashealsolearned,GriffithsandCompanydidnotreallyfavortheirofficialsmixingwiththoseofanyothercompany,andforthatreasonfewofthemdid.Yethe,beingamemberofthefamily,asLiggettoncesaidtohim,couldprobablydoashechoseastothat.Buthedecided,becauseofthestrongwarningsofGilbert,aswellashishighbloodrelationswithhisfamily,thathehadbetterremainasaloofaspossible.Andsosmilingandbeingasgenialaspossibletoall,neverthelessforthemostpart,andinordertoavoidDillardandothersofhisilk,andalthoughhewasmuchmorelonelythanotherwisehewouldhavebeen,returningtohisroomorthepublicsquaresofthisandnear-bycitiesonSaturdayandSundayafternoons,andeven,sincehethoughtthismightpleasehisuncleandcousinandsoraisehimintheiresteem,beginningtoattendoneoftheprincipalPresbyterianchurches—theSecondorHighStreetChurch,towhichonoccasion,ashehadalreadylearned,theGriffithsthemselveswereaccustomedtoresort.Yetwithoutevercomingincontactwiththeminperson,sincefromJunetoSeptembertheyspenttheirweek-endsatGreenwoodLake,towhichmostofthesocietylifeofthisregionasyetresorted.
InfactthesummerlifeofLycurgus,insofarasitssocietywasconcerned,wasverydull.
