           "Well,that’salittlebetter.Amancouldhardlybedownthereaslongasyou’vebeenandnotknowwhetherhehadlearnedanythingornot."Thendecidingthathewasbeingtoosevere,perhaps,hemodifiedhistoneslightly,andadded:"Butthat’snotwhyIsentforyou.There’sanothermatterIwanttotalktoyouabout.Tellme,didyoueverhavechargeofanypeopleoranyotherpersonthanyourself,atanytimeinyourlife?"

           "Idon’tbelieveIquiteunderstand,"repliedClyde,who,becausehewasalittlenervousandflustered,hadnotquiteregisteredthequestionaccurately.

           "Imeanhaveyoueverhadanypeopleworkunderyoubeengivenafewpeopletodirectinsomedepartmentsomewhere?Beenaforemanoranassistantforemaninchargeofanything?"

           "No,sir,Ineverhave,"answeredClyde,butsonervousthathealmoststuttered.ForGilbert’stonewasverysevereandcoldhighlycontemptuous.Atthesametime,nowthatthenatureofthequestionwasplain,itsimplicationcametohim.
