           Hemightbethere,andthenhewouldprobablyassumethatsuperiorattitude,tomakehimfeelhisinferiorposition,ifhecouldandClydehadtheweaknessattimesofadmittingtohimselfthathecould.Andnodoubt,ifhe(Clyde)soughttocarryhimselfwithtoomuchofanairinthepresenceofthisfamily,Gilbertmostlikelywouldseektotakeitoutofhiminsomewaylaterinconnectionwiththeworkinthefactory.Hemightseetoit,forinstance,thathisfatherheardonlyunfavorablethingsabouthim.And,ofcourse,ifhewereretainedinthiswretchedshrinkingroom,andgivennoshowofanykind,howcouldheexpecttogetanywhereorbeanybody?ItwasjusthisluckthatonarrivinghereheshouldfindthissameGilbertlookingalmostlikehimandbeingsoopposedtohimforobviouslynoreasonatall.

           However,despiteallhisdoubts,hedecidedtomakethebestofthisopportunity,andaccordinglyonSundayeveningatsixsetoutfortheGriffiths’residence,hisnervesdecidedlytautbecauseoftheordealbeforehim.Andwhenhereachedthemaingate,alarge,archedwroughtironaffairwhichgaveinonawide,windingbrickwalkwhichledtothefrontentrance,heliftedtheheavylatchwhichheldthelargeirongatesinplace,withalmostaquakingsenseofadventure.Andasheapproachedalongthewalk,hefeltasthoughhemightwellbetheobjectofobservantandcriticaleyes.PerhapsMr.SamuelorMr.GilbertGriffithsoroneortheotherofthetwosisterswaslookingathimnowfromoneofthoseheavilycurtainedwindows.
