OnerelatedtotheattitudeoftheGriffithsthemselves,which,apartfromthatofGilbert,wasnotoneofoppositionorcompleteindifference,somuchasitwasafailureonthepartofSamuelGriffithsinthefirstinstanceandtheotherslargelybecauseofhimtograsptheratheranomalous,ifnotexactlylonelypositioninwhichClydewouldfindhimselfhereunlessthefamilychosetoshowhimatleastsomelittlecourtesyoradvisehimcordiallyfromtimetotime.YetSamuelGriffiths,beingalwaysverymuchpressedfortime,hadscarcelygivenClydeathoughtduringthefirstmonth,atleast.Hewashere,properlyplaced,asheheard,wouldbeproperlylookedafterinthefuture—whatmore,justnow,atleast?
Andsoforalloffiveweeksbeforeanyactionofanykindwastaken,andwithGilbertGriffithscomfortedthereby,Clydewasallowedtodriftalonginhisbasementworldwonderingwhatwasbeingintendedinconnectionwithhimself.Theattitudeofothers,includingDillardandthesegirls,finallymadehispositionhereseemstrange.
However,aboutamonthafterClydehadarrived,andprincipallybecauseGilbertseemedsocontenttosaynothingregardinghim,theelderGriffithsinquiredoneday:
"Well,whataboutyourcousin?How’shedoingbynow?"AndGilbert,onlyalittleworriedastowhatthismightbode,replied,"Oh,he’sallright.Istartedhimoffintheshrinkingroom.Isthatallright?"
