           AndafterdinnerhemadehiswayoutintotheprincipalthoroughfaresofLycurgus,onlytoobservesuchacrowdofnondescriptmill-workersas,judgingthesestreetsbyday,hewouldnothavefanciedswarmedherebynightgirlsandboys,menandwomenofvariousnationalities,andtypesAmericans,Poles,Hungarians,French,Englishandforthemostpartifnotentirelytouchedwithapeculiarsomethingignoranceorthicknessofmindorbody,orwithacertainlackoftasteandalertnessordaring,whichseemedtomarkthemoneandallasofthebasementworldwhichhehadseenonlythisafternoon.Yetinsomestreetsandstores,particularlythosenearerWykeagyAvenue,abettertypeofgirlandyoungmanwhomighthavebeenandnodoubtwereofthevariousofficegroupsofthedifferentcompaniesovertheriverneatandactive.

           AndClyde,walkingtoandfro,fromeightuntilten,whenasthoughbypre-arrangement,thecrowdinthemorecongestedstreetsseemedsuddenlytofadeaway,leavingthemquitevacant.AndthroughoutthistimecontrastingitallwithChicagoandKansasCity.(WhatwouldRattererthinkifhecouldseehimnowhisuncle’sgreathouseandfactory?)Andperhapsbecauseofitssmallness,likingittheLycurgusHotel,neatandbrightandwithabrisklocallifeseemingtocenteraboutit.Andthepost-officeandahandsomelyspiredchurch,togetherwithanoldandinterestinggraveyard,cheekbyjowlwithanautomobilesalesroom.Andanewmovingpicturetheaterjustaroundthecornerinasidestreet.
