           "You’remycousin,Ibelieve,"hecommented,rathericily,asClydecameforwardandstoppedathinandcertainlynotveryfavorablesmileplayingabouthislips.

           "Yes,Iam,"repliedClyde,reducedandconfusedbythiscalmandratherfreezingreception.Ontheinstant,ashenowsaw,hecouldnotpossiblyhavethesameregardandesteemforthiscousin,ashecouldanddidhaveforhisuncle,whoseverygreatabilityhaderectedthisimportantindustry.Rather,deepdowninhimselfhefeltthatthisyoungman,anheirandnothingmoretothisgreatindustry,wastakingtohimselfairsandsuperioritieswhich,butforhisfather’sskillbeforehim,wouldnothavebeenpossible.

           Atthesametimesogroundlessandinsignificantwerehisclaimstoanyconsiderationhere,andsogratefulwasheforanythingthatmightbedoneforhim,thathefeltheavilyobligatedalreadyandtriedtosmilehisbestandmostingratiatingsmile.YetGilbertGriffithsatonceappearedtotakethisasabitofpresumptionwhichoughtnottobetoleratedinamerecousin,andparticularlyonewhowasseekingafavorofhimandhisfather.

           However,sincehisfatherhadtroubledtointeresthimselfinhimandhadgivenhimnoalternative,hecontinuedhiswrysmileandmentalexamination,thewhilehesaid:"Wethoughtyouwouldbeshowingupto-dayorto-morrow.Didyouhaveapleasanttrip?"

           "Oh,yes,very,"repliedClyde,alittleconfusedbythisinquiry.
