           Afternearlyayearandahalfhehaddecidedthatthesearchmusthavelessened,hisownpartinthecrimebeingforgotten,possibly,orbythennotdeemedsufficientlyimportanttopursueandwhenhewasoncemoremakingamoderatelivingasthedriverofadeliverywagoninChicago,ajobthatpaidhimfifteendollarsaweek,heresolvedthathewouldwritehismother,becausenowhecouldsaythathehadadecentplaceandhadconductedhimselfrespectablyforalongtime,althoughnotunderhisownname.

           Andsoatthattime,livinginahallbedroomontheWestSideofChicagoPaulinaStreethehadwrittenhismotherthefollowingletter:

           DEARMOTHER:

           AreyoustillinKansasCity?Iwishyouwouldwriteandtellme.Iwouldsoliketohearfromyouagainandtowriteyouagain,too,ifyoureallywantmeto.HonestlyIdo,Ma.Ihavebeensolonelyhere.Onlybecarefulanddon’tletanyoneknowwhereIamyet.Itwon’tdoanygoodandmightdoalotofharmjustwhenIamtryingsohardtogetastartagain.Ididn’tdoanythingwrongthattime,myself.ReallyIdidn’t,althoughthepaperssaidsojustwentalong.ButIwasafraidtheywouldpunishmeforsomethingthatIdidn’tdo.Ijustcouldn’tcomebackthen.Iwasn’ttoblameandthenIwasafraidofwhatyouandfathermightthink.Buttheyinvitedme,Ma.Ididn’ttellhimtogoanyfasterortotakethatcarlikehesaid.Hetookithimselfandinvitedmeandtheotherstogoalong.
