           What!Runamachine,laybricks,learntobeacarpenter,oraplasterer,orplumber,whenboysnobetterthanhimselfwereclerksanddruggists’assistantsandbookkeepersandassistantsinbanksandrealestateofficesandsuch!Wasn’titmenial,asmiserableasthelifehehadthusfarbeenleading,towearoldclothesandgetupsoearlyinthemorninganddoallthecommonplacethingssuchpeoplehadtodo?

           ForClydewasasvainandproudashewaspoor.Hewasoneofthoseinterestingindividualswholookeduponhimselfasathingapartneverquitewhollyandindissolublymergedwiththefamilyofwhichhewasamember,andneverwithanyprofoundobligationstothosewhohadbeenresponsibleforhiscomingintotheworld.Onthecontrary,hewasinclinedtostudyhisparents,nottoosharplyorbitterly,butwithaveryfairgraspoftheirqualitiesandcapabilities.Andyet,withsomuchjudgmentinthatdirection,hewasneverquiteableatleastnotuntilhehadreachedhissixteenthyeartoformulateanypolicyinregardtohimself,andthenonlyinaratherfumblingandtentativeway.

           Incidentallybythattimethesexlureorappealhadbeguntomanifestitselfandhewasalreadyintenselyinterestedandtroubledbythebeautyoftheoppositesex,itsattractionsforhimandhisattractionforit.And,naturallyandcoincidentally,thematterofhisclothesandhisphysicalappearancehadbeguntotroublehimnotalittlehowhelookedandhowotherboyslooked.
