           "HisnewworkattheGreen–Davidsonhadalreadycausedhimtothinkdifferentlyofhowoneshouldliveanyone.Shedidnotanswerhimandhewenttohisroomtochangehisclothes.

           Amonthorsoafterthis,comingeastonMissouriAvenuelateoneevening,heagainsawhismotherintheneardistancecomingwest.Inthelightofoneofthesmallstoreswhichrangedinarowonthisstreet,hesawthatshewascarryingaratherheavyold-fashionedbag,whichhadlongbeenaboutthehousebuthadneverbeenmuchusedbyanyone.Onsightofhimapproaching(asheafterwardsdecided)shehadstoppedsuddenlyandturnedintoahallwayofathree-storybrickapartmentbuilding,andwhenhecameuptoit,hefoundtheoutsidedoorwasshut.Heopenedit,andsawaflightofstepsdimlylit,upwhichshemighthavegone.However,hedidnottroubletoinvestigate,forhewasuncertain,oncehereachedthisplace,whethershehadgonetocallonsomeoneornot,ithadallhappenedsoquickly.Butwaitingatthenextcorner,hefinallysawhercomeoutagain.Andthentohisincreasingcuriosity,sheappearedtolookcautiouslyaboutbeforeproceedingasbefore.Itwasthisthatcausedhimtothinkthatshemusthavebeenendeavoringtoconcealherselffromhim.Butwhy?

           Hisfirstimpulsewastoturnandfollowher,sointerestedwashebyherstrangemovements.Buthedecidedlaterthatifshedidnotwanthimtoknowwhatshewasdoing,perhapsitwasbestthatheshouldnot.
