           Atthesametimehisfirstthoughtwas,ofcourse,thatshehadobservedhisclothesandgoings-onandwasconvincedthathewasdeceivingherabouttheamountheearned.Andinpartthiswastrue,onlysochangedwasClyde’smanneroflate,thathismotherhadbeencompelledtotakeaverydifferentattitudetowardhimandwasbeginningtobenotalittledubiousastoherfurthercontroloverhim.Recently,orsincehehadsecuredthislatestplace,forsomereasonhehadseemedtohertohavegrownwiser,moreassured,lessdubiousofhimself,inclinedtogohisownwayandkeephisowncounsel.Andwhilethishadtroubledhernotalittleinonesense,itratherpleasedherinanother.FortoseeClyde,whohadalwaysseemedbecauseofhissensitivenessandunrestsomuchofaproblemtoher,developinginthisveryinterestingwaywassomething;thoughattimes,andinviewofhisveryrecentfinery,shehadbeenwonderingandtroubledastothenatureofthecompanyhemightbekeeping.Butsincehishoursweresolongandsoabsorbing,andwhatevermoneyhemadeappearedtobegoingintoclothes,shefeltthatshehadnorealreasontocomplain.
