           Andnowthethoughtofbeingnearher,beingabletodancewithheragain,drewhimsogreatlythat,despitethefactthatthreeyouths,amongthemthatsameBertGettler,appearedonthescenetoescortthem,andalthoughheandRattererhadpreviouslyagreedtogotoatheatertogether,hecouldnothelpshowinghowmuchhewouldprefertofollowthoseotherssomuchsothatRattererfinallyagreedtoabandonthetheateridea.Andsoontheywereoff,ClydegrievingthathecouldnotwalkwithHortense,whowaswithGettler,andhatinghisrivalbecauseofthis;butstillattemptingtobeciviltoLouiseandGreta,whobestowedsufficientattentiononhimtomakehimfeelatease.Ratterer,havingnoticedhisextremepreferenceandbeingalonewithhimforamoment,said:"YoubetternotgettoostuckonthatHortenseBriggs.Idon’tthinkshe’sonthelevelwithanybody.She’sgotthatfellowGettlerandothers.She’llonlyworkyouan’youmightnotgetanything,either."

           ButClyde,inspiteofthishonestandwell-meantcaution,wasnottobedissuaded.Onsight,andbecauseofthewitcheryofasmile,themagicandvigorofmotionandyouth,hewascompletelyinfatuatedandwouldhavegivenordoneanythingforanadditionalsmileorglanceorhandpressure.
