           "No,sir!It’snottrue!"returnedClyde,clearlyandemphatically."Ineverwentthereofmyownaccordinthefirstplace,andIonlywenttherebecauseshedidn’tlikeGrassLake."Andhere,becausehehadbeensinkingdowninhischair,hepulledhimselfupandlookedatthejuryandtheaudiencewithwhatmeasureofstrengthandconvictionhecouldsummonaspreviouslyhehadbeentoldtodo.Atthesametimeheadded:"AndIwantedtopleaseherinanywaythatIcouldsothatshemightbealittlemorecheerful."
