           Squires,formerlycaptainofthebell-hopsoftheGreen–DavidsonatthetimeClydewasthere,inwhichheexplainedthatapartfromtheoneincidentinconnectionwiththepurloinedautomobile,heknewnothingderogatorytoClyde;andthatalwayspreviously,hehadfoundhimprompt,honest,willing,alertandwell-mannered.Alsothatatthetimetheaccidentoccurred,hehimselfhadbeensatisfiedthatClydecouldhavebeenlittleelsethanoneofthoseledandthatifhehadreturnedandproperlyexplainedmattershewouldhavebeenreinstated.Itwasirrelevant.

           ThereafterfollowedClyde’sstoryofhow,havingfledfromthedifficultiesthreateninghiminKansasCityandhavingwanderedhereandtherefortwoyears,hehadfinallyobtainedaplaceinChicagoasadriverandlaterasabell-boyattheUnionLeague,andalsohowwhilestillemployedatthefirstoftheseplaceshehadwrittenhismotherandlateratherrequestwasabouttowritehisuncle,when,accidentallymeetinghimattheUnionLeague,hewasinvitedbyhimtocometoLycurgus.Andthereupon,intheirnaturalorder,followedallofthedetails,ofhowhehadgonetowork,beenpromotedandinstructedbyhiscousinandtheforemanastothevariousrules,andthenlaterhowhehadmetRobertaandstilllaterMissX.
