           TheinterestingpartofallthiswasthatClyde,inspiteofacertainstrainofrefinementwhichcausedhimtolookaskanceatmostofthis,wasstillfascinatedbythecrudepictureoflifeandlibertywhichitoffered.Amongsuchasthese,atleast,hecouldgo,do,beashehadnevergoneordoneorbeenbefore.Andparticularlywashepleasedandenlightenedorratherdubiouslyliberatedinconnectionwithhisnervousnessanduncertaintyinregardtohischarmorfascinationforgirlsofhisownyears.Foruptothisverytime,andinspiteofhisrecentfirstvisittotheerotictempletowhichHegglundandtheothershadledhim,hewasstillconvincedthathehadnoskillwithorcharmwheregirlswereconcerned.Theirmereproximityorapproachwassufficienttocausehimtorecedementally,tochillorpalpitatenervously,andtolosewhatlittlenaturalskillhehadforconversationorpoisedbantersuchasotheryouthspossessed.Butnow,inhisvisitstothehomeofRatterer,ashesoondiscovered,hewastohaveampleopportunitytotestwhetherthisshynessanduncertaintycouldbeovercome.
