Atthesametime,however,Brookharthavinginstructedhimthat,whateverhispersonalconclusionsinregardtoClyde,alawyerofsortswasindispensable—thecharity,ifnotthehonor,oftheGriffithsbeingthismuchinvolved,thewesternGriffiths,asBrookharthadalreadyexplainedtohim,havingnothingandnotbeingwantedinthecaseanyhow—hedecidedthathemustfindonebeforeleaving.Inconsequence,andwithoutanyknowledgeofthelocalpoliticalsituation,heproceededtotheofficeofIraKellogg,presidentoftheCataraquiCountyNationalBank,who,althoughCatchumandidnotknowit,washighinthecouncilsoftheDemocraticorganization.Andbecauseofhisreligiousandmoralviews,thissameKelloggwasalreadyhighlyincensedandirritatedbythecrimeofwhichClydewasaccused.Ontheotherhand,however,becauseashewellknewthiscasewaslikelytopavethewayforanadditionalRepublicansweepattheapproachingprimaries,hewasnotblindtothefactthatsomereducingoppositiontoMasonmightnotbeamiss.FateseemedtooobviouslytobefavoringtheRepublicanmachineinthepersonofandcrimecommittedbyClyde.
Forsincethediscoveryofthismurder,Masonhadbeenbaskinginsuchpublicityandevennation-widenotorietyashadnotbefallenanydistrictattorneyofthisregioninyearsandyears.
