           Clyde,theeldestboy,andthetwoyoungerchildrenmerelygazedattheground,oroccasionallyattheirfather,withafeelingthatpossiblyitwasalltrueandimportant,yetsomehownotassignificantorinvitingassomeoftheotherthingswhichlifeheld.Theyheardsomuchofthis,andtotheiryoungandeagermindslifewasmadeforsomethingmorethanstreetandmissionhallprotestationsofthissort.

           Finally,afterasecondhymnandanaddressbyMrs.Griffiths,duringwhichshetookoccasiontorefertothemissionworkjointlyconductedbytheminanear-bystreet,andtheirservicestothecauseofChristingeneral,athirdhymnwasindulgedin,andthensometractsdescribingthemissionrescueworkbeingdistributed,suchvoluntarygiftsaswereforthcomingweretakenupbyAsathefather.Thesmallorganwasclosed,thecampchairfoldedupandgiventoClyde,theBibleandhymnbookspickedupbyMrs.Griffiths,andwiththeorgansupportedbyaleatherstrappassedovertheshoulderofGriffiths,senior,themissionwardmarchwastakenup.

           DuringallthistimeClydewassayingtohimselfthathedidnotwishtodothisanymore,thatheandhisparentslookedfoolishandlessthannormal—"cheap"wasthewordhewouldhaveusedifhecouldhavebroughthimselftoexpresshisfullmeasureofresentmentatbeingcompelledtoparticipateinthiswayandthathewouldnotdoitanymoreifhecouldhelp.Whatgooddiditdothemtohavehimalong?Hislifeshouldnotbelikethis.
