           Franzhadbydegreesbecomeaccustomedtothecount’spallor,whichhadsoforciblystruckhimattheirfirstmeeting.Hecouldnotrefrainfromadmiringtheseverebeautyofhisfeatures,theonlydefect,orrathertheprincipalqualityofwhichwasthepallor.Truly,aByronichero!Franzcouldnot,wewillnotsayseehim,buteventhinkofhimwithoutimagininghissternheaduponManfred’sshoulders,orbeneathLara’shelmet.Hisforeheadwasmarkedwiththelinethatindicatestheconstantpresenceofbitterthoughts;hehadthefieryeyesthatseemtopenetratetotheverysoul,andthehaughtyanddisdainfulupperlipthatgivestothewordsituttersapeculiarcharacterthatimpressesthemonthemindsofthosetowhomtheyareaddressed.Thecountwasnolongeryoung.
