           Sayingthesewords,theTransteverindisappeareddownthestaircase,whilehiscompanion,mufflinghisfeaturesmorecloselythanbeforeinthefoldsofhismantle,passedalmostclosetoFranz,anddescendedtothearenabyanoutwardflightofsteps.ThenextminuteFranzheardhimselfcalledbyAlbert,whomadetheloftybuildingre-echowiththesoundofhisfriend’sname.Franz,however,didnotobeythesummonstillhehadsatisfiedhimselfthatthetwomenwhoseconversationhehadoverheardwereatasufficientdistancetopreventhisencounteringtheminhisdescent.Intenminutesafterthestrangershaddeparted,FranzwasontheroadtothePiazzadeSpagni,listeningwithstudiedindifferencetothelearneddissertationdeliveredbyAlbert,afterthemannerofPlinyandCalpurnius,touchingtheiron-pointednetsusedtopreventtheferociousbeastsfromspringingonthespectators.Franzlethimproceedwithoutinterruption,and,infact,didnothearwhatwassaid;helongedtobealone,andfreetoponderoverallthathadoccurred.Oneofthetwomen,whosemysteriousmeetingintheColosseumhehadsounintentionallywitnessed,wasanentirestrangertohim,butnotsotheother;andthoughFranzhadbeenunabletodistinguishhisfeatures,fromhisbeingeitherwrappedinhismantleorobscuredbytheshadow,thetonesofhisvoicehadmadetoopowerfulanimpressiononhimthefirsttimehehadheardthemforhimeveragaintoforgetthem,hearthemwhenorwherehemight.
