           Danteshadtastednothing,buthethoughtnotofhungeratsuchamoment;hehastilyswallowedafewdropsofrum,andagainenteredthecavern.Thepickaxethathadseemedsoheavy,wasnowlikeafeatherinhisgrasp;heseizedit,andattackedthewall.Afterseveralblowsheperceivedthatthestoneswerenotcemented,buthadbeenmerelyplacedoneupontheother,andcoveredwithstucco;heinsertedthepointofhispickaxe,andusingthehandleasalever,withjoysoonsawthestoneturnasifonhinges,andfallathisfeet.Hehadnothingmoretodonow,butwiththeirontoothofthepickaxetodrawthestonestowardshimonebyone.Theaperturewasalreadysufficientlylargeforhimtoenter,butbywaiting,hecouldstillclingtohope,andretardthecertaintyofdeception.Atlast,afterrenewedhesitation,Dantesenteredthesecondgrotto.
