           Noonehadtheslightestsuspicion;andwhennextday,takingafowling-piece,powder,andshot,Dantesdeclaredhisintentiontogoandkillsomeofthewildgoatsthatwereseenspringingfromrocktorock,hiswishwasconstruedintoaloveofsport,oradesireforsolitude.However,Jacopoinsistedonfollowinghim,andDantesdidnotopposethis,fearingifhedidsothathemightincurdistrust.Scarcely,however,hadtheygoneaquarterofaleaguewhen,havingkilledakid,hebeggedJacopototakeittohiscomrades,andrequestthemtocookit,andwhenreadytolethimknowbyfiringagun.ThisandsomedriedfruitsandaflaskofMontePulciano,wasthebilloffare.Danteswenton,lookingfromtimetotimebehindandaroundabouthim.Havingreachedthesummitofarock,hesaw,athousandfeetbeneathhim,hiscompanions,whomJacopohadrejoined,andwhowereallbusypreparingtherepastwhichEdmond’sskillasamarksmanhadaugmentedwithacapitaldish.

           Edmondlookedatthemforamomentwiththesadandgentlesmileofamansuperiortohisfellows."Intwohours’time,"saidhe,"thesepersonswilldepartricherbyfiftypiastreseach,togoandrisktheirlivesagainbyendeavoringtogainfiftymore;thentheywillreturnwithafortuneofsixhundredfrancs,andwastethistreasureinsomecitywiththeprideofsultansandtheinsolenceofnabobs.Atthismomenthopemakesmedespisetheirriches,whichseemtomecontemptible.
