           Theoldpatrondidnotinterfere,forhetoohadrecognizedthesuperiorityofDantesoverthecrewandhimself.Hesawintheyoungmanhisnaturalsuccessor,andregrettedthathehadnotadaughter,thathemighthaveboundEdmondtohimbyamoresecurealliance.Atseveno’clockintheeveningallwasready,andattenminutespastseventheydoubledthelighthousejustasthebeaconwaskindled.Theseawascalm,and,withafreshbreezefromthesouth-east,theysailedbeneathabrightbluesky,inwhichGodalsolightedupinturnhisbeaconlights,eachofwhichisaworld.Dantestoldthemthatallhandsmightturnin,andhewouldtakethehelm.WhentheMaltese(forsotheycalledDantes)hadsaidthis,itwassufficient,andallwenttotheirbunkscontentedly.Thisfrequentlyhappened.
