           Twomonthsandahalfelapsedinthesetrips,andEdmondhadbecomeasskilfulacoasterashehadbeenahardyseaman;hehadformedanacquaintancewithallthesmugglersonthecoast,andlearnedalltheMasonicsignsbywhichthesehalfpiratesrecognizeeachother.Hehadpassedandre-passedhisIslandofMonteCristotwentytimes,butnotoncehadhefoundanopportunityoflandingthere.Hethenformedaresolution.AssoonashisengagementwiththepatronofTheYoungAmeliaended,hewouldhireasmallvesselonhisownaccountforinhisseveralvoyageshehadamassedahundredpiastresandundersomepretextlandattheIslandofMonteCristo.Thenhewouldbefreetomakehisresearches,notperhapsentirelyatliberty,forhewouldbedoubtlesswatchedbythosewhoaccompaniedhim.Butinthisworldwemustrisksomething.PrisonhadmadeEdmondprudent,andhewasdesirousofrunningnoriskwhatever.Butinvaindidherackhisimagination;fertileasitwas,hecouldnotdeviseanyplanforreachingtheislandwithoutcompanionship.

           Danteswastossedaboutonthesedoubtsandwishes,whenthepatron,whohadgreatconfidenceinhim,andwasverydesirousofretaininghiminhisservice,tookhimbythearmoneeveningandledhimtoatavernontheViadel’Oglio,wheretheleadingsmugglersofLeghornusedtocongregateanddiscussaffairsconnectedwiththeirtrade.
