Iftheytookhimtothecemeteryandlaidhiminagrave,hewouldallowhimselftobecoveredwithearth,andthen,asitwasnight,thegrave-diggerscouldscarcelyhaveturnedtheirbacksbeforehewouldhaveworkedhiswaythroughtheyieldingsoilandescaped.Hehopedthattheweightofearthwouldnotbesogreatthathecouldnotovercomeit.Ifhewasdetectedinthisandtheearthprovedtooheavy,hewouldbestifled,andthen—somuchthebetter,allwouldbeover.Danteshadnoteatensincetheprecedingevening,buthehadnotthoughtofhunger,nordidhethinkofitnow.Hissituationwastooprecarioustoallowhimeventimetoreflectonanythoughtbutone.
ThefirstriskthatDantesranwas,thatthejailer,whenhebroughthimhissupperatseveno’clock,mightperceivethechangethathadbeenmade;fortunately,twentytimesatleast,frommisanthropyorfatigue,Danteshadreceivedhisjailerinbed,andthenthemanplacedhisbreadandsouponthetable,andwentawaywithoutsayingaword.
