           Thecounthadjustopenedadoor.Immediatelyabrilliantlightfromthenextroom,orratherfromthepalaceadjoining,shoneupontheroominwhichhewasgentlyglidingintohislastsleep.Thenhesawawomanofmarvellousbeautyappearonthethresholdofthedoorseparatingthetworooms.Pale,andsweetlysmiling,shelookedlikeanangelofmercyconjuringtheangelofvengeance."Isitheaventhatopensbeforeme?"thoughtthedyingman;"thatangelresemblestheoneIhavelost."MonteCristopointedoutMorreltotheyoungwoman,whoadvancedtowardshimwithclaspedhandsandasmileuponherlips.

           "Valentine,Valentine!"hementallyejaculated;buthislipsutterednosound,andasthoughallhisstrengthwerecentredinthatinternalemotion,hesighedandclosedhiseyes.Valentinerushedtowardshim;hislipsagainmoved.
