           Butthemysteriesofnatureareincomprehensible,andtherearecertaininvitationscontainedineventhecoarsestfoodwhichappealveryirresistiblytoafastingstomach.Danglarsfelthisownnottobeverywellsuppliedjustthen,andgraduallythemanappearedlessugly,thebreadlessblack,andthecheesemorefresh,whilethosedreadfulvulgaronionsrecalledtohismindcertainsaucesandside-dishes,whichhiscookpreparedinaverysuperiormannerwheneverhesaid,"MonsieurDeniseau,letmehaveanicelittlefricasseetoday."Hegotupandknockedonthedoor;thebanditraisedhishead.Danglarsknewthathewasheard,soheredoubledhisblows."Checosa?"askedthebandit."Come,come,"saidDanglars,tappinghisfingersagainstthedoor,"Ithinkitisquitetimetothinkofgivingmesomethingtoeat!"Butwhetherhedidnotunderstandhim,orwhetherhehadreceivednoordersrespectingthenourishmentofDanglars,thegiant,withoutanswering,wentonwithhisdinner.Danglars’feelingswerehurt,andnotwishingtoputhimselfunderobligationstothebrute,thebankerthrewhimselfdownagainonhisgoat-skinanddidnotbreatheanotherword.

           Fourhourspassedbyandthegiantwasreplacedbyanotherbandit.
