           Butnotwithstandingtheserenesky,thegracefullyformedboats,andthegoldenlightinwhichthewholescenewasbathed,theCountofMonteCristo,wrappedinhiscloak,couldthinkonlyofthisterriblevoyage,thedetailsofwhichwereonebyonerecalledtohismemory.ThesolitarylightburningattheCatalans;thatfirstsightoftheChateaud’If,whichtoldhimwhithertheywereleadinghim;thestrugglewiththegendarmeswhenhewishedtothrowhimselfoverboard;hisdespairwhenhefoundhimselfvanquished,andthesensationwhenthemuzzleofthecarbinetouchedhisforeheadallthesewerebroughtbeforehiminvividandfrightfulreality.Likethestreamswhichtheheatofthesummerhasdriedup,andwhichaftertheautumnalstormsgraduallybeginoozingdropbydrop,sodidthecountfeelhisheartgraduallyfillwiththebitternesswhichformerlynearlyoverwhelmedEdmondDantes.Clearsky,swift-flittingboats,andbrilliantsunshinedisappeared;theheavenswerehungwithblack,andthegiganticstructureoftheChateaud’Ifseemedlikethephantomofamortalenemy.
