           AquarterofanhourafterwardsthedoorofValentine’sroomopened,andMonteCristoreappeared.Pale,withadulleyeandheavyheart,allthenoblefeaturesofthatface,usuallysocalmandserene,wereovercastbygrief.Inhisarmsheheldthechild,whomnoskillhadbeenabletorecalltolife.Bendingononeknee,heplaceditreverentlybythesideofitsmother,withitsheaduponherbreast.
