           Beauchamp,oneofthekingsofthepress,andthereforeclaimingtherightofathroneeverywhere,waseyingeverybodythroughhismonocle.HeperceivedChateau–RenaudandDebray,whohadjustgainedthegoodgracesofasergeant-at-arms,andwhohadpersuadedthelattertoletthemstandbefore,insteadofbehindhim,astheyoughttohavedone.Theworthysergeanthadrecognizedtheminister’ssecretaryandthemillionnaire,and,bywayofpayingextraattentiontohisnobleneighbors,promisedtokeeptheirplaceswhiletheypaidavisittoBeauchamp.
