           TheeyeoftheoldmanwasriveteduponaspotwhichVillefortcouldscarcelydistinguish.Hisglancewassofullofhate,offerocity,andsavageimpatience,thatVillefortturnedoutofthepathhehadbeenpursuing,toseeuponwhatpersonthisdarklookwasdirected.Thenhesawbeneathathickclumpoflinden-trees,whichwerenearlydivestedoffoliage,MadamedeVillefortsittingwithabookinherhand,theperusalofwhichshefrequentlyinterruptedtosmileuponherson,ortothrowbackhiselasticball,whichheobstinatelythrewfromthedrawing-roomintothegarden.Villefortbecamepale;heunderstoodtheoldman’smeaning.
