           Itwasnowhisturntolookabouthim;theHoteldeVille,amassivesixteenthcenturybuilding,wasonhisright;anyonecoulddescendfromtheopeningsinthetower,andexamineeverycorneroftheroofbelow,andAndreaexpectedmomentarilytoseetheheadofagendarmeappearatoneoftheseopenings.Ifoncediscovered,heknewhewouldbelost,fortheroofaffordednochanceofescape;hethereforeresolvedtodescend,notthroughthesamechimneybywhichhehadcomeup,butbyasimilaroneconductingtoanotherroom.Helookedaroundforachimneyfromwhichnosmokeissued,andhavingreachedit,hedisappearedthroughtheorificewithoutbeingseenbyanyone.Atthesameminute,oneofthelittlewindowsoftheHoteldeVillewasthrownopen,andtheheadofagendarmeappeared.Foraninstantitremainedmotionlessasoneofthestonedecorationsofthebuilding,thenafteralongsighofdisappointmenttheheaddisappeared.
