           Whenhedrewneartothebedroomdoor,MonteCristoexpectedthathewascomingin,andraisedoneofhispistols;buthesimplyheardthesoundoftheboltsslidingintheircopperrings.Itwasonlyaprecaution.Thenocturnalvisitor,ignorantofthefactthatthecounthadremovedthestaples,mightnowthinkhimselfathome,andpursuehispurposewithfullsecurity.
