           "M.deMonteCristoisapprisedthatthisnightamanwillenterhishouseintheChamps–Elyseeswiththeintentionofcarryingoffsomepaperssupposedtobeinthesecretaryinthedressing-room.Thecount’swell-knowncouragewillrenderunnecessarytheaidofthepolice,whoseinterferencemightseriouslyaffecthimwhosendsthisadvice.Thecount,byanyopeningfromthebedroom,orbyconcealinghimselfinthedressing-room,wouldbeabletodefendhispropertyhimself.Manyattendantsorapparentprecautionswouldpreventthevillainfromtheattempt,andM.deMonteCristowouldlosetheopportunityofdiscoveringanenemywhomchancehasrevealedtohimwhonowsendsthiswarningtothecountawarninghemightnotbeabletosendanothertime,ifthisfirstattemptshouldfailandanotherbemade."

           Thecount’sfirstideawasthatthiswasanartificeagrossdeception,todrawhisattentionfromaminordangerinordertoexposehimtoagreater.
